Philosophy

My philosophy for coaching minor hockey is centred around teaching individual skills, teaching team concepts, and having fun while in a safe and healthy environment.  I believe that all players should  be given the opportunity to learn all aspects of the game, such as power play and penalty kill.  Lastly, all players should have the opportunity to play during exhibition, regular season, playoff, and tournament games.  I use exhibition and regular season games to try and distribute the ice time as equally as possible among the players.  There may be times when I will  shortened the bench, however, that only occurs in tournament games, OMHA play downs, and playoffs in which the game is competitive and there is a chance to win.

Goals

My goals for the upcoming season are to continue to develop the players’ individual skills, such as skating, puck control, shooting, and passing, as well as to continue to build on team concepts, instil work ethic and discipline, and to have fun while doing the previously mentioned aspects.  There will be an emphasis on teaching the players the proper way to give and receive a body check as this age group is introduced to body checking.  The ultimate goal will be to have FUN while achieving the previously mentioned goals.

TEAM RULES

Our rules will focus on 3 simple guidelines:
                    MUTUAL RESPECT

APPRECIATION ONLY

                        ACTIVE LISTENING

 1.  Team is not to be unsupervised in the dressing room.  A team official must be the last person to leave the dressing room.  It is advisable that there be 2 team officials in the dressing room at a time. (OHF’s ‘Two Deep’ guideline).

2.  To promote independence and team bonding, it would be appreciated if there were no parents or family members in the dressing room before or after a game or practice.

3.  For the safety of spectators, they are not permitted on the benches during practice or games. (Insurance reasons)

4.  For practice, be ready to go on the ice 10 minutes before the scheduled practice time.

5.  For games:

                    1. Please arrive at the arena 45 minutes prior to the game, home or away.
                    2. All coaches require a shirt and tie.  Trainer requires a mock neck.
                    3. All players will require a shirt and tie.
                    4. Players should have some runners in their bag for pregame warm up.
                    5. All players should be ready 15 minutes prior to the game.
                    6. After a game, the players will come into the room, take off their helmets and gloves to listen to what any coaches have to say about how the game went and then proceed to taking off their equipment.

6.  There is to be no horse play of any kind in the dressing room.  This also involves playing hockey in the dressing room or hallways of the arena. (arena staff will be enforcing this)

7.  The dressing rooms must be left clean after each practice and game

8.  If you are unable to make a practice or game, please contact any member of the coaching staff.

9.  Both players and coaches will respect one another.

10.  For parents:

                      1. Always be positive and encouraging.

                      2. Remember, it is just a game.  Don’t take things too seriously.

                      3. Show respect for all officials, coaches, fans and players.

                      4. Try not to coach your child away from the rink.  It may confuse your child as it may conflict with what the coaches are asking of them.

11.  Bullying will NOT be tolerated.  There will be ZERO tolerance for it.  Any player found guilty of bullying will be released from the team.

If any of the rules are not followed:

A player will sit for 1 period for the first offence,
A player will sit for 2 periods for the second offence, and
A player will not play for 1 game for the third offence.  There will also be a meeting with the coaching staff, the player, and the parent to determine a course of action.

Thank you and I look forward to an exciting hockey season with all of you.
