ATOM TRYOUTS
With tryouts only a few days away, I’d like to welcome everyone and wish all the players the best of luck.  I look forward to seeing all those who’ve registered on the ice next week.

Each tryout session will include skating, puck handling and scrimmage situations.  Players should be prepared to compete at their highest level possible.  Tryouts are not a time to “get back on the ice”, but instead, should be considered an opportunity to showcase one’s hockey abilities to the fullest.  Being unprepared physically and mentally can have a negative impact on a player’s performance and ultimately whether or not they are considered for this team.  Parents should refer to the STMHA website for the rules and regulations pertaining to tryouts as well as the dates and times for each session.  And please, ensure your players arrive for tryouts prepared!

Players selected for the 2011-12 Atom Jr. Stars will possess a strong foundation of core hockey skills.  They will also need to demonstrate they are hard working, competitive and committed to a team environment both on and off the ice.  A player’s attitude towards his teammates and the coaching staff will also be a consideration.  Finally, the coachability of a player, that is to say how well he listens to and follows instructions, will be a determining factor in our selection process.

Throughout the up coming season, the coaching staff will continue to develop each player’s core skills including skating, stick handling, shooting, and positioning.  We will also continue to work on individual and team tactics as well as providing an introduction to game strategies.

The first half of this team’s season is already posted on our website so please feel free to review the team calendar at your convenience.  In addition to the practices and games already scheduled, we will be adding an off-ice training session each week.  These once a week sessions are intended to increase each players physical endurance as well as providing an opportunity off the ice for the players to build friendships and to bond as teammates.

Finally, I’d like to remind all potential players that being part of a travel hockey team is a substantial commitment for players, parents and coaches alike.  This commitment is not limited to the ice times for practices and league games, but also includes tournaments, general team activities and the overall atmosphere that surrounds the team and all those involved.  The coaching staff will strive to make every part of our season a positive experience while balancing player development, team competitiveness and overall enjoyment for all.  We expect the same level of commitment from the players and their families.

If anyone has any questions before, or during the tryout process, please feel free to contact via email through this website, or in person after each session.

Regards,

Derek MacMillan
Head Coach
Atom Jr. Stars.
