Midgets win 1st Round over Southpoint!
Game 5 between the Southpoint Capitals and the STMHA Major Midgets promised to be exciting with both teams wanting to finish the series and move on to round 2, but from the moment they dropped the puck… it was clear that St. Thomas wanted it more!  St. Thomas arrived in Leamington with a full bus of players, parents and fans!  More dedicated fans followed by car.  We filled the stands and cheered on our team with horns, noise makers and a megaphone!  A number of the players girlfriends made the trip down and supported their favorite player by wearing his home jersey…

St. Thomas came to play and took control from the 1st puck drop… 13 seconds into the game Braden Hellems scored the 1st goal, assisted by Tanner Turley and that was quickly followed by a 2nd goal 26 seconds later by Adam Fisher, assisted by Sean Gordon and Brett Beattie.

A temporary goalie change by Southpoint and the early use of their time-out didn’t seem to help, by 4 minutes in the score was 3-0 for St. Thomas.  (3rd goal scored by Braden Hellems, assisted by Tyler Beaulieu)

Southpoint managed to settle down in the 2nd period and scored at 10:50 to make it a closer 3-1 game.

In the 3rd period, Brad Holder scored our 4th goal, assisted by Trevor Smith and Dan Gordon.  With less than 3 minutes left in the 3rd period, St. Thomas had 2 men sent to the penalty box giving Southpoint an opportunity to change things around.  They pulled their goalie and pressed hard with 6 on 3 for a minute and a half! With 1 second left in the 1st penalty, Southpoint scored to bring the score to 4-2.  Southpoint still had a 1 man advantage and saw their opportunity to turn things around.  They carried on with an 6 on 4, however with less than 50 seconds remaining, Sean Gordon scored an empty netter (assisted by Luke McGuire) to finish off Southpoints hopes of stealing away our win!

What an exciting game!  The whole team played great, back-stopped by Jerrad Casey with 27 saves.  St. Thomas now moves on the round 2 against Amherstberg.
