Spring Tryouts Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some answers to some of the questions we are getting regarding spring tryouts.  We will try to keep adding to this as more questions arise. Please make sure you fill out the ONLINE TRYOUT REGISTRATION FORM, CLICK HERE  to access.

What teams are trying out in May?

Just the teams that play in Seeded AA/A Alliance loop are conducting spring tryouts. They are:

Minor Atom (2007), Major Atom (2006), Minor Peewee (2005), Major Peewee (2004), Minor Bantam (2003), Major Bantam (2002), Minor Midget (2001)

Why is STMHA moving to spring tryouts?

All of our ‘A’ teams listed above play in the Alliance league, almost all of the teams in this loop conduct spring tryouts, this move will get us aligned with their tryouts.  Also from an association standpoint, this gives the summer time to get some tasks done in a timely fashion such as uniforms, sponsorships etc.

Why only the ‘A’ teams?

Just these teams will have tryouts as Novice, Novice AE, Atom AE, Peewee AE, Bantam AE, Midget and Midget AE teams do not start league play until the beginning of October.  These tryouts can be started around Labour Day and are also consistent with other teams in their respective leagues.

How do I register for tryouts?

To register for tryouts, you must fill in the online tryout registration form.  It is located under the Registration tab on the home page of stmha.net.  Payment for tryouts is due at the door on the first tryout (cash or cheque only) or in person in advance at the STMHA office (cash, cheque or credit card).  Credit card will not be accepted at the door at the first tryout, cash or cheque only.  CLICK HERE to access form

What do I need to bring to tryouts?

At your first tryout, a board member will be present at a sign in table, check in there.  You will need to bring your cash or cheque, approved NRP passport from your home centre, your Respect in Sport Parent number if you have just taken it and any other documents required to register.

When does general registration occur?

General registration will occur in the same manner as previous years.  The online portal will be opened sometime in April and there will be registration nights held throughout the summer. You access online general registration by CLICKING HERE

When exactly are spring tryouts?

The tryout schedule is posted and located under the ‘Tryout Schedule’ tab located on the home page of stmha.net.  STMHA will set up 2 90 minute skates and 2 exhibition games for each team. Once each skate is scheduled they will be posted.  Tryouts will start May 2nd and conclude around the 15th.  Check the schedule regularly for updates as coaches can add more games if they feel need.  To access tryout schedule CLICK HERE

How many skates am I guaranteed?

After payment of the tryout fee is received you are entitled to attend the first 2 skates posted.  Coaches can start releasing players after the 2nd scheduled skate.  At that point if you are released, you would then wait for AE tryouts to start or go back to home centre.

How does Non-Resident Player work?

Please refer to the NRP article located under the Registration tab located on the home page of stmha.net  or by CLICKING HERE

I am planning to move into the STMHA boundaries but not until after the tryouts, what do I do?

You can still be eligible to attend tryouts.  You will need to first fill out an OMHA Residential Transfer form.  This is located under the ‘About Us’ tab and Forms on the home page of stmha.net.  This needs to be completed and bring all necessary documents to the STMHA office as soon as you have them together.  These need to be sent to the OMHA to get temporary approval.  Approval is given on a case by case basis.  You might not have all documentation but bring what you have.  Once (if) approved, you are then eligible to tryout as a STMHA member.  If successful in making the team, you have until early September to gain final approval from OMHA.  If you do not get approved you are not eligible and will lose your roster spot.

What if I just want to play for the AE team?

Please refer to Regulation 3 in our Rules and Regulations but as a general rule you must tryout for the A team in order to be eligible to AE.

True Sport
The True Sport Principles are a rallying point for True Sport members — they are universal. The principles can be brought to life in any sport at any level, from playground to podium. An Olympic rowing squad can embrace these principles with the same sense of pride and purpose as an elementary school, an old-timers' league, or a community hockey arena. For sport to be truly good and have the opportunity to make the greatest difference, all seven of these principles need to be in play at all times, working in perfect balance with one another.
