Minor Bantams Win Hespeler Tournament!!
The St. Thomas Millcreek Plumbing Minor Bantam A team travelled to Hespeler over the Christmas break to participate in the 49th Annual Hespeler Rep Olympics. There they faced some very good A teams from all over Ontario. The team played 5 games of fast, intense, disciplined hockey over 4 days, and were rewarded with a tournament championship!!
Game one was on Sunday December 27. The boys played the Halton Hills Thunder, a big, fast team. The boys came out of the gate slow, and were down 2-0 after the first period. They gained some momentum, and closed the gap, but ultimately lost 3-2 to open the tournament.
Game two on Monday December 28 saw them face off against the host Hespeler Shamrocks, a pesky and gritty team. The boys played a strong game overall and cruised to a 5-2 victory.
Game three was on the morning of Tuesday December 29, and the boys played a small, fast, and very disciplined Oakridge Aeros team. This was a tight game, with few chances for either team. St. Thomas was able to score with less than 5 minutes left in the game, and squeaked out a 1-0 win. This put our record at 2 wins and 1 loss, good enough for second place in the division.
Game four was a semi final game on the afternoon of Tuesday December 29. The boys faced off against a strong, physical Brampton 45's team. However Brampton was no match for our intensity, and the boys cruised to a 4-0 victory. On to the finals.
The finals were on Wednesday December 30 against the Halton Hills Thunder, the same team that handed us a loss to open the tournament. The game was a fast, intense, well played game. St. thomas opened the scoring in the 2nd period on the power play, and Halton Hills responded with a goal midway through the 3rd period. So regulation time ended 1-1, off to overtime. A three minute 4 on 4 overtime solved nothing, and so then it was off to a three minute 3 on 3 double overtime. Early in the double overtime a Halton Hills player took a major penalty and game misconduct, and this gave our boys a 3 on 2 advantage. The boys wasted little time, and scored the winner seconds later, making them the tournament champions!!!
This championship was a total team effort, with every boy playing a strong, disciplined tournament. Good job boys, and let's keep the momentum going over the next few months!!!
