Your Ansells Awards Minor Peewee Jr. Stars are the 42nd
Annual Essex Earlybird Tournament Champions.
The Jr. Stars went a perfect 5-0 in capturing the title.
The Stars stared out Friday morning with a hard-fought 4-2 win against the Clarington Toros. The Stars jumped out to a 3-0 lead and had to hold off a charge by the Toros late in the third. An empty netter sealed the deal for the Stars.
Game 2 saw the Stars square off against a feisty US team in the St. Clair Shores Saints. Even thought the Saints played hard, they weren’t able to solve the goaltending and solid team defence, as the Stars came away with a 4-0 lead.
Next up saw the Stars face the Innisfil Winterhawks. The Stars controlled the game from the opening faceoff, cruising to a solid team effort 7-0 win.
Game 4 of the weekend saw the Stars face their old OMHA foe in the Essex Ravens. The Stars have had numerous tight contests with the Ravens over the past few years, and this game was no different. In a tightly-contested, see-saw battle, the Stars came out on top 3-2.
These wins set up a rematch with the St. Clair Shores Saints in the final. The Stars quickly found out that they were in for a battle against the Saints. After the Saints got out to a 1-0 lead in the first, the Stars responded with 3 straight goals in the 2nd to take the lead. The Saints scored a late one in the 2nd to get within one, but that’s a close as they would get. The Stars played a total team effort 3rd period to hold off a good team from St. Clair Shores.
