The St. Thomas Tyke Select Stars (06-07) came away winners despite a thrilling, triple overtime loss in the finals of a weekend tournament in St. Thomas. This group of kids demonstrated determination, teamwork and a fun-loving attitude throughout the weekend to nearly take this highly competitive tournament. Things got off to a great start with a convincing 6-1 win over Wallaceburg which was followed by a hard-fought 3-3 tie with Lambton Shores. This advanced the team to a semi-final matchup with Mooretown. The Stars built up an early 3-0 lead and narrowly held on for a 3-2 victory, propelling them to the final and a match-up against the Kitchener Capitals.

This advanced the team to a semi-final matchup with Mooretown. The Stars built up an early 3-0 lead and narrowly held on for a 3-2 victory, propelling them to the final and a match-up against the Kitchener Capitals. A high level of skill was clearly apparent from these 6 and 7 year-olds right from the opening faceoff. The Stars were down 3-1 going into the third but proved they never quit in tying the game 3-3 after regulation. It would take three periods of overtime to settle the affair in which the Stars had no shortage of chances but fell victim to a late goal by Kitchener as the game was about to head to a shoot-out. Both teams came away feeling like champions after the game. Special recognition goes to goalies Darren Hagerty and L.J. Wilson who were nothing short of spectacular all weekend. Coach Andrew Power and his assistants are to be congratulated for how far they have taken this group of aspiring hockey players in a relatively short period of time.
