Midget AE Stars Cruise to Victory
The St Thomas Jr Stars Midget AE team cruised to a 4-2 victory against the Petrolia Oilers on Sunday night.  After giving up the first goal to Petrolia, the Stars fought back with two of their own only to see Petrolia tie the game. Then the Stars turned up the heat and dominated the balance of the game.

The game was only minutes old when a poor back check lead to the opening goal on a well place shot by Oilers player Evan Freer.  A few minutes later, Matt Roberts broke down the right wing and fired a shot just inside the far post unassisted.  The young PA announcer from Petrolia had no sooner announced Matt’s goal when he broke down the wing again and fired another shot in the same spot for his second goal of the game.  That goal was unassisted as well.  The Oilers struck gold again after the Stars missed an assignment in their own end and Chris Docherty tucked the puck in at the side of the Stars net.  From that point on, Brennan Agius shut the door and held the Oilers off the score sheet.

The Stars opened the second tied 2-2 and really began to control the play led by the line of Andrew Wood, Pierce Lawrence and Thomas Cosgrove.  All three lines had several glorious scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the net.  A four minute power play for the Stars then broke things wide open.  Kaiden Beer released a quick slapshot from the left point one minute into the first penalty that beat the Oilers goaltender to the glove side unassisted.  Then just ten seconds later, Aiden Bilyea found himself all alone in the slot and fired a perfect shot into an almost open net on a feed from Bailey Douglas in the corner.  Derek Smith picked up the second assist.

The third period went without a goal but the Stars weren’t without chance and even had several shots on net while killing penalties. Honourable mentions go to Brennan Agius for timely saves when they were most needed, Matt Iachetta for filling in on defence and doing a fantastic job and finally overall to the entire team for making some excellent breakouts, strong play and hard skating. The team may have also broken the New York Rangers record for blocked shots in a single game.

Next up is a visit to Forest on Tuesday night where the Midget AE’s will take on the Lambton Shores Predators at 9:30 pm.
