“A” GOLD MEDAL CHAMPIONSHIP – 6-2 WIN OVER NEPEAN COBRAS – Game MVP – Noah Dos Santos

(WOOO WHOOO) give yourselves a colossal round of applause – you guys played your hearts out.

In an electrifying weekend of hockey over Feb 5 – Feb 7 the ATOM AE STARS took a break from OMHA Playdowns and outplayed every team they were up against.  GREAT TEAMWORK BOYS!!!!  Even when the team looked like they could not come back they fought their hardest to come out with the wins.  The ATOM AE STARS overcame wave after wave of penalties; (was that about 10 in 1 period that game), injury and tough plays to outmuscle their opponents.  Since it was a tournament, the boys also had a fun filled weekend hanging out together: including activities such as playing in the pool, eating, playing mini stick games, oh did I mention eating.

GAME 1 OVERVIEW - 4-2 WIN OVER NEPEAN COBRAS

In the opening game of the tournament after a long car ride the ATOM AE STARS came out a bit weary and a little sluggish, but managed to end the first period up a goal as Caden Beshara went down the wing and passed to David Gauthier to draw first blood.  After the change of ends the STARS dominated the play as Caden Beshara scored from D to D and Tysen Hunter battled and battled to score 2 more for the STARS.  Ryan Farrell and Cameron Watson kept tipping the puck up the boards and getting the quick pass off to keep the plays going.   Ryan Payne and Devin Robison-Sareh fought hard against the boards and came up with the puck to help keep it in the offensive end to secure the win at the end of the game.

GAME 2 OVERVIEW - 5-1 WIN OVER NASC Falcons

The STARS shone and just dominated as a team in this game.  Dylan Buhler opened the scoring on a shorthanded play with a quick wrist shot as he received a bank pass from Tysen Hunter.  David Gauthier notched another grove in his stick as he got another long pass from Caden Beshara, ending the first up 2-0.  Josh Hare was a force on the ice, making plays, fore checking, and setting up passes, firing at the net, and making scoring opportunities like the one where Cameron Watson scored on a rebound shot from Josh.  Tysen Hunter again faked players all over the place as he went around all and netted another top shelf goal ending the second 4-0.  In the third Ryan Payne passed off the boards to Tysen Hunter who passed across the ice to Dylan Buhler to get the final goal of the game.  Very little shots went to the STARS net as Sam Graham, Noah Allen and Carson Nurse on defense kept clearing the puck up around the boards.

GAME 3 OVERVIEW - 6-1 WIN OVER RICHMOND HILL

Even though it was a blow out as far as the score went, it was the phenomenal goaltending skills of Matt Beckwith that was the story of this game.  Matt just had that glove hand that was faster than the puck and stood square to the shooter capturing the pucks in his chest and then to glove.  Becksie covered all the net with a sweeping motion and did not even show a five hold to the offense.  To help Matt on the occasions he needed it, Josh Allen and Caden Beshara were there to block shots and carry the puck out of the zone.  Goals were scored by: Tysen Hunter (2) one unassisted as he faked the goalie and slid it behind and another on a shorthanded play with a cross ice pass from Dylan Buhler, Ryan Payne lit up another as he beat the goalie thru the five hole, Josh Hare (2) one on a pass from Carson Nurse in the defensive zone to centre ice and then Haresy whistled one in the top of the net and another goal by Josh as he received a pass from Ryan Farrell going up thru the centre.  Noah Dos Santos scored another on a shorthanded breakaway beating the goalie on the glove side.

SEMI-FINAL GAME OVERVIEW - 3-1 WIN OVER KINGSTON

Definitely the hardest game of the tournament for the ATOM AE STARS; Kingston won their pool, ST THOMAS won their pool and it was an all out war to go to the finals.  Every player on the ice both defense and offense were playing the positions full out and ST THOMAS struck first as Noah Dos Santos scored from the slot and he out muscled their defense and it was 1-0 after the first.  To start the second period Tysen Hunter gave the team some life and scored one emotional goal putting the STARS up 2-0.  Then in the second, Kingston cut the lead to 2-1 on a missed offside call and as the coaching staff protested it resulted in the first of many penalties; penalties that at one point had 5 or 6 ST THOMAS players in the box, including most of the defense.  Some of the forwards: like Noah Dos Santos, Josh Hare and David Gauthier had to do double duty playing defense as well to kill of the numerous penalties that were accessed to the STARS.  As ST THOMAS played most of the second period shorthanded, 5 players to 3, everyone stepped up their game and Chris Wood had one heck of a solid performance stopping every shot that came his way. Getting the pads out into the butterfly and sweeping across the goal crease from who knows where as everyone gasped as he was knocked down out of the play.  Chris kept his cool and made a complete difference to this game.  Also being in all the right spots to battle and come up with the puck was Noah Dos Santos as he kept getting the puck and clearing more time off the penalty clock.  The second period finally ended and the penalties finally expired and not one goal was scored by Kingston.  With the third period starting the boys kept their focus on winning the game and going to the finals.  Caden Beshara hustled down the wing and then picking up the pass was Tysen Hunter to secure the victory for the STARS as the clock ran down.  Sam Graham, Carson Nurse, Noah Allen and Caden Beshara frustrated the forwards of Kingston as they could not get set to shot the puck.

A” GOLD MEDAL CHAMPIONSHIP – 6-2 WIN OVER NEPEAN COBRAS

The ATOM AE STARS then had the finals to play against the Nepean Cobras who won their division and their semi final game.  The game started a little flat but then progressed to a total team victory.  Nepean scored twice in the first as the STARS were a little beat up from the earlier game.  The STARS got one as Caden Beshara took the puck around the opposing net and passed to Tysen Hunter to beat the goalie over the shoulder.  The second period was all the STARS, Josh Hare tied the game and fired up the team as he carried the puck and speeded to the net.  Tysen Hunter got the game winning goal as he split the defense and headed straight for the net.  The final goals and plays got Noah Dos Santos MVP of the finals when he assisted on David Gauthier’s goal as David unleashed a bullet by the goalie and Noah scored 2 more, one unassisted from behind the goal line on an impossible angle and another where he picked up the rebound as Devin Robison-Sareh banked one off the goalie.  Again the defense was solid, outplaying the man in front of the net.  Matt Beckwith played as though he was 7 feet tall as he was always there squared and in position making each save look too easy and saving all those shots.  Cameron Watson and Ryan Payne made great efforts to pass the puck to their line mates and getting the puck down the ice.  As the third period started you could see the excitement in everyone, each player wanted to do their best to win this championship.
