Midgets Lose in Overtime to Amherstburg
Submitted By sherene casey on Monday, February 08, 2010
The Elgin Chrysler Major Midgets lost in O/T Sunday to the Amherstburg Stars 3-2 in a heart breaking finish to the 2009/10 season.  St. Thomas was leading the 2nd round with 2 points – 0 going into the weekend, but after 2 disappointing losses Friday and Saturday… they were in a do-or-die situation Sunday at home.  STMHA alumni Adam Brisson (Aylmer Spitfires) came to support his old team mates acting as announcer with the help of Ricky Corkum our AP Goalie… they kept the energy level high with music and game stats! There was another large crowd out to watch and support our boys on Super Bowl Sunday and St. Thomas came prepared to play, scoring the 1st goal of the game at the end of the 1st period.  By the end of the 2nd, Amherstburg had tied the score and continued to out shoot us.  St. Thomas took the lead again early in the 3rd but with just 57 seconds remaining, Amherstburg made wise use of their timeout… pulled their goalie and with the help of the extra attacker… scored to send us into overtime!

The overtime would prove to be short… with Amherstburg scoring less than 2 minutes into the O/T… ending St. Thomas’ hopes of continuing on to game 5.

A sad ending to an otherwise great season!  From an early season tournament in Richmond Hill, to a 5 day tour of Connecticut, to a hard fought battle in round 1 to win over Southpoint… this has been a great season!  The boys finished with a record of 26-20-6.

The end of this season marks the end of our 1992 players minor hockey careers… and it will be hard to say goodbye to these young men who have played in the STMHA system for many years… Tyson Corkum – Captain; Jeff Laidlaw – Asst Captain; Brian Yurek – Asst Captain; Randy Belanger - Goalie; Adam Galloway - Forward; Scott Holder - Defense and Tyler Coursolle - Defense.  We wish them the best in their futures as some will move on to post secondary education next fall… and maybe even junior hockey!

As a team, we have been very fortunate to have a great coaching staff, John Corkum – Head Coach; Paul Galloway – Trainer and our 2 Non-Parent Assistant Coaches – Dave Nesbitt and Bob Hepburn… It is hard to express our gratitude to this group of volunteers who have spent countless hours working with our sons!  This season would not have been possible without their commitment to the sport that we love.

All of the members of the Elgin Chrysler Major Midgets (players, coaches and parents) would also like to thank STMHA for the opportunity to participate in the Major Midget program this year… this unique program sets STMHA apart from other associations and is very much appreciated by all involved!

Good Luck to all of the STMHA teams in their remaining play downs! GO STARS GO!
